'THE FIVE GREAT ELEMENTS' OF PORFIDIOISM: (SEE NEXT PAGE)
OUR VALUES
RESPECTING PEOPLE AND THE PLANET
ETHICAL AGAVE SOURCING
We are committed to buying only agave plants, which are ethically procured to create a better future for Jalisco’s micro agave farming community, the very back bone of Porfidio and the 100% agave tequila industry at large. It’s not just the right thing to do from an ethical point of view, it is also good for our business. By helping to provide a decent standard of living for agave micro-farmers in a developing country like Mexico, by paying fair-trade prices which exceed those paid by our industry colleagues, we not only strengthen the local agricultural community towards long-term sustainability, but also quite selfishly ensure an abundant supply of high quality agave which is made available on a preferential basis to Porfidio.
NON-USE OF AGRO-CHEMICALS
We are committed to sourcing all of our agave plants directly from micro-farmers rather than from agro-corporations or agave wholesalers. We like to keep the growing of agave as a personal affair between our micro-farmer partners and Porfidio. This not only benefits the farmers financially by eliminating the middle man’s profit margin, which we pass on to our micro-farmers, it also assures us, by virtue of our long-standing personal relationships with a select group of micro farmers, that our agave plants are responsibly cultivated and sustainably farmed, in accordance with our requirements, without pesticides, chemical fertilizers and artificial irrigation.
Fundamentally, we prefer our agave plants to be entirely natural, because it is nature which produces the most aroma-intensive agave plants for the production of pure agave tequila, and not human intervention, which, even with today’s scientific knowledge, is only capable of increasing the size and weight of the agave plant but not the intensity of its aroma components. Quite to the contrary, when raised unnaturally ‘on steroids’, agave plants actually lose aroma intensity, which is contrary to our objective as producers of pure agave spirits of the highest quality.
ETHICALLY-CORRECT LAND USE
We are committed to a policy of ethically correct land use. In this regard, the botanical uniqueness of the agave plant certainly helps. It is one of those very rare crops that is capable of growing naturally, without artificial irrigation, on semi-desert ‘waste’ land, thereby being by definition non-competitive with the world’s major food crops for our planet’s limited agricultural land space. That is the key point which makes cultivation of the agave plant unquestionably ethically correct as an agricultural crop that is primarily used for a non-essential, but highly enjoyable, product such as 100% agave spirits.
